Following a merger deal with Deacons, which is headquartered in Sydney, Norton Rose has become the first major British firm to break into Australia. The deal will create a £420 million turnover business and give Norton Rose 12 offices in a country that has proven unlucky for other UK firms in part due to the global economic crisis. Norton Rose CEO Peter Martyr sees the merger as an important step in the firm's plans for expansion in Asia, having opened their 8th Asia office in Shanghai in 2006.
