White & Case recently broke away from plans to merge with Singaporean local alliance partner Venture Law after it was one of six firms to receive a license to practice in Singapore. It had initially stated last December that even if it received a license, it would still merge with Venture Law, which is a small 10-lawyer firm. As of press time, neither White & Case nor Venture Law has commented on the sudden change. Other firms that were granted a license include Clifford Chance, Latham & Watkins, Allen & Overy, Norton Rose, and Herbert Smith.
The French firm Gide Loyrette Nouel will be simultaneously launching two offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi this week. Each office will have five attorneys each, and the reason for the strategic launch is to connect the firm’s North Africa offices with the Middle East. Currently, Gide also has had an office in Riyadh for 30 years. The two new UAE offices will bring the firm’s total offices to 24.
